In this video, Tod Mattox goes over three keys to hitting a good float serve. He has the server say the keys out loud to reinforce how the serve should be executed.
- Lift – raising the arm with the ball to execute the toss.
- Step – step forward with the left foot for right-handed servers and the right foot for left-handed servers.
- Swing – hit the ball.
Mattox also talks about the importance of good tempo. He says the server’s hitting hand should contact the ball immediately after the forward-stepping foot hits the ground. This transfer of weight gives the server a good rhythm, which is likely to improve the quality of the serve.
