Renowned coach John Dunning goes over an advanced technique of setting called "tilt setting" that some high level setters use in emergency situations, either when the pass is too tight to the net or the setter has to run to the pass and can't square her shoulders to the target in time.
The tilt set: The setter runs to the ball, keeps the shoulders squared to the direction of the ball, and then tilt the shoulders so they can follow through to the target without facing the target. Avoid arching the back.
The same tilt set can be performed when the pass is pushed too closely to the net; turn the back to the net and tilt the shoulders to the target, avoiding running into the net.
